Happy Feet

March 19, 2007

Going to see Happy Feet I expected a typical and formulated Disney-style film. By the end, however, I was positively surprised by this movie. Not only was it funny and entertaining, but it also carried an important and urgent message. I can recommend this movie because it is more than just pure entertainment, as it tries to raise awareness about the real and imminent issue of over-fishing the world’s oceans. It would be great to see more children’s movies addressing such issues.

Earthlings

January 10, 2007

Narrated by Academy Award Nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Walk the Line) and featuring music by the critically acclaimed platinum artist Moby, EARTHLINGS is a documentary film about humankind’s complete economic dependence on animals raised for pets, food, clothing, entertainment and scientific research. Using hidden cameras and never-before-seen footage, EARTHLINGS chronicles the day-to-day practices of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit. Powerful, informative, controversial and thought-provoking, EARTHLINGS is by far the most comprehensive documentary ever produced on the correlation between nature, animals and human economic interests.

This documentary is very well done and definitely one of the most important and comprehensive movies to show the connection of nature, animals and humankind. The imagery is rather graphic and brutal, but it is worth watching because it shows what really goes on in the animal industry and we mustn’t look away. As consumers we have the power to directly influence the industry by making responsible, compassionate and rational decisions in order to end the completely unnecessary cruelty to the animals, ourselves and the planet. This documentary is definitely a must-see for any person claiming to be a responsible individual.

Fast Food Nation

December 24, 2006

Black Gold

December 24, 2006

Black Gold Movie
“Multinational coffee companies now rule our shopping malls and supermarkets and dominate the industry worth over $80 billion, making coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But while we continue to pay for our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their coffee fields. Nowhere is this paradox more evident than in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Tadesse Meskela is one man on a mission to save his 74,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As his farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans on the international market, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to find buyers willing to pay a fair price. Against the backdrop of Tadesse’s journey to London and Seattle, the enormous power of the multinational players that dominate the world’s coffee trade becomes apparent. New York commodity traders, the international coffee exchanges, and the double dealings of trade ministers at the World Trade Organisation reveal the many challenges Tadesse faces in his quest for a long term solution for his farmers.” From blackgoldmovie.com
